Go Ahead and Listen

You know that feeling you get sometimes? The one where you know you should do something? That deep down feeling pulling you to do jump all-in? Well, I for one know what it is; it’s God. And believe me when you listen to Him and do what He asks, it’s worth it.

I worked at camp last week, so Monday morning I packed up all my stuff and threw it in the car. We were running a little late so I was in a hurry and as I went out the door  I stopped; I had forgotten my Bible. (I feel bad: I don’t carry my Bible with me everywhere. I know I should, though.) I really didn’t feel like running back in the house just to get it but something inside was telling me to so I gave in and quickly got it.

One of the girls I work with had recently started dating a guy and was very happy but when I got to camp, she seemed troubled. She’s a great Christian girl; I look up to her. She loves reading her Bible, going to church and singing but she shared that since she starting seeing her boyfriend, she’d been slacking off on her time with God. I was a little concerned. We sat and talked a while and then she said that her Bible, the one she always carried with her, was in “retirement.” She’d left it at home and hadn’t touched it in a while, which was very unlike her. Her Bible had always been like her baby! I suddenly got one of those “feelings” as I remembered what I had almost left at home. I realized what I needed to do: I needed to give her my Bible. God had given me that “feeling” so I would bring it along and let her borrow it! God knew what had been going on with my friend and that she needed reassurance from His Word.

I got my Bible and together we asked God to show us what we needed to learn. We opened the Bible to Exodus 3: Moses and the burning bush. This chapter tells us how God appeared to Moses in the burning bush and told him to go rescue the Israelites. Moses complained he couldn’t do it and was too scared but God said to him, “I will be with you.” Those five words mean a lot!  To my friend, it meant God was there for her. To me it meant obey His voice.

Listening to God tell me to go back and get my Bible wasn’t a big deal to me, but to my friend it was. God may be asking some of you to do something you may think is small, like praying for someone. But for some of you, He may be asking you to take a big step, just like Moses. He may be asking you to talk to a friend about God or something that may make you step out of your comfort zone. But go ahead and listen to Him because He promised He’d be with you, no matter what.
