“Let my heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God.” -Bob Pierce
Now before we all nod our heads in liturgical agreement: let’s think about the implications.
Have you ever had your heart broken by someone you love? You will know if you have. If you think you might have, you probably haven’t. Heartbreak is unmistakeable. It is a literal deep pain where your heart beats in your chest. You can barely breathe, you can barely think, and all life in your once-vibrant soul is gone. It takes a long time for a broken heart to mend.
Most of us who have had, truly had our hearts broken don’t ever want to feel that again. We don’t know how we ever made it through. Some broken hearts, sadly, have never made it through and have become bitter.
This prayer by Mr. Pierce is not a light one. This is heavy stuff. God feels this same intense emotion when we disobey him, when we tune out the poor, and when we forget what he’s done for us. And don’t think God is just a sap who just gets his heart broken easily. He has given so much to us and yet we so flippantly just brush him off.
Think about when your heart was broken. Do you sincerely want God to break your heart for what breaks his?
