Be A Pencil

by Ryan Lewis

“I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.” -Mother Teresa

I found this quote in a book I’m currently reading. This is such a perfect illustration of how God uses us to accomplish His plan. It is so easy to think that God wants to plug people into his plan according to their abilities. The best musicians would lead worship, gifted orators would preach, and people fluent in multiple languages would be missionaries to foreign countries. And to those who aren’t especially gifted at anything, God hands a mop to clean the floors.

Actually, God delights in doing the opposite. He called Moses, who couldn’t talk real good, to approach the leader of the land. Moses complained that he wasn’t good enough, and this made God angry. All God needed was someone willing to do a job. “God doesn’t call the equipped, he equips the called,” as someone said.

When God writes his love letter to the world, he needs a pencil. All he wants is a pencil, not a brilliant super-human. Be a pencil.
